Currently, I’m working on finalizing the adventure Troll of the Town by Kelly Pawlik and getting it ready to publish. I’m developing some new mechanics that will support Richard Pett’s massive and brilliant Fury of the Forsaken. I’m slowly working on Crisis in Castlebriar, the new adventure path project for next year set in the nation of Nelenia. I’m correcting errata and revising and expanding the original Thrones & Bones: Norrøngard setting book. I’m gradually converting around 60+ 5e monsters to Black Flag Roleplaying for use in upcoming projects and/or a stand-alone monster book. And I’ve just taken on one of my very rare writing projects for another publisher (secret, secret, I have a secret). Busy, yes?
So naturally, I started another project!
Presenting Encounters in Katerina.
“What is this?,” you say. Keep reading after the cool cover to find out….

Encounters in Katerina is a bit of an experiment and a bit of a new thing and an exciting collaboration and also something for this newsletter!
First, it’s a continuation and deepening of my partnership with my good friends at Heroic Maps, who do all the battlemap cartography for Lazy Wolf Studio projects. They have an enormous catalog of nearly 1,400 beautiful, detailed maps. On a roughly monthly schedule, I’m going to select one or more of their maps and prepare an encounter, or sometimes a short adventure, to go along with it. These adventures will be set all across the continent of Katerina, the larger landmass of which my Scandinavian-flavored land of Norrøngard is just a tiny northwestern portion.
Encounters in Katerina will give me an opportunity to explore new countries and regions, to introduce new monsters, new places, and new lore. Adventures will come out as often as I’m inspired and be the length they need to be. Some will be things you can drop in to an existing campaign as a short aside, while others may be multi-map adventures in their own right. I have a wealth of non-Norse monsters that have never appeared anywhere, and quite a few cities and countries I’m eager to introduce to you. (And quite a few places in Norrøngard we still haven’t been either!)
Encounters in Katerina will begin as a feature for paid subscribers, joining the existing series on novel plotting. Discount codes for the relevant Heroic Maps will be included with each encounter. The posts may be made public after a period of time (TBD). Regardless, once I have a set number of them (10? 12? 20?), they’ll be gathered into PDFs and physical books, and the PDF editions will either be free or heavily discounted for paid subscribers (again TBD).
So there you have it. Let me know what you think of this new undertaking, and look for the first Encounters in Katerina in just a few weeks.
